The Thai bed is an architectural beauty of ultimate function. With ingenious originality, the serene minimalism of its design conceals its many useful features.

The headboard is composed of two large panels that rise vertically by means of individual electric buttons, revealing practical shelf space inside. Between the two headboard panels, a recessed lamp in frosted glass illuminates the bed with a soft glow. The integrated glass topped bedside tables with drawers are cantilevered from the frame thereby omitting a clutter of legs. The entire composition appears to be floating above the floor. Wooden slats inside the platform eliminate the need for a box spring.

Mid Century Modern is still one of my favorite furniture design eras for many reasons and the Cavour Desk by Carlo Mollino is a fine example of what the movement was all about. This curvaceous design sure looks ahead of its time considering its 1949 release. Mollino's philosophy "everything is permissible as long as it is fantastic" is reflected in his body of work which included architecture and furniture design. The high perch may even help you hide away for a quick power nap while listening to your favorite music thanks to speakers and six large subwoofers within the bed frame that literally surround you with music. Kaffe Matthews who is quite versed in the production side of the musical industry has been making and performing new electro-acoustic music since 1990. She is acknowledged as a leading figure and pioneer in the field of electronic improvisation and live composition making on average 50 performances a year worldwide.

Matthews has become well known for making site-specific sound works live, playing in the dark in the middle of the space, the audience surrounding her, the sounds moving around them. She uses self-designed software matrices through which she pulls, pushes and reprocesses sounds live, using microphones and feedback within the space; the site then becoming her instrument. It is this practice that she has shifted to sonic furniture building, with Sonic Bed London and the Worldwide Bed project being a central pin in this ongoing project.
